Former British F3 champion and Ferrari tester was the second driver for Team Lotus in 1986 after Ayrton Senna's now infamous refusual to have Derek Warwick as a joint number one. A brief F1 career was ended after failing to deliver results, and the impending arrival of Satoru Nakajima (along with Honda engines). Then went on to take his aristocratic title of Marquis of Bute as well as doing some sportscar races and winning the 1988 Le Mans 24 Hour in a Jaguar XJR-9LM. Also holds the Mount Stuart Motorsport Classic event at his estate.
Has tested in John Nielsen's Den Bla Avis Zytek LMP675 in the run up to Le Mans 2003, but couldn't race due to other commitments.
