As this site (and my research) continues, these are the books that I've collected.
The Lotus Book (Series Two) - The Complete History Of Lotus Cars (ISBN 1902351002) by William Taylor from Coterie Press Ltd, 1999. This book has
information and pictures of every Lotus creation from the Mark 1 to the Type 115 (aka Elise GT1, 1997). I believe a new revision may be out soon.
The Lotus Book Collectables - The Complete Collection Of Lotus Memorabilia (ISBN 1902351010) by William Taylor from Coterie Press Ltd, 2000. This book covers various Lotus collectables from the Mark 1 to the Type 118 (aka the evasive Lotus M250). I believe a new revision may be out soon. I bought both these books in a collector's edition box |
Lotus Racing Cars 1968-2000 (ISBN 0750925531) by John Tipler and from Sutton Publishing, 2000. As the sub-title states, it covers Lotus' domination of F1 in the late 1960s, through the technical innovations of the 1970s and then the slow decline (with the slight exception of the Senna years) through the 1980s until the end of the team in 1994. The revival refers to the rise of the Lotus Elise as a race car. I also have the previous book Lotus Racing Cars 1948-1968. |
Autosport File - Lotus (ISBN 060055662) from Temple Press. This book is a collection of articles from Autosport that includes: Season Reviews 1976-1987, The Chapman Legacy, Peter Warr, Gerard Ducarouge, Lotus Drivers 1976-1987 and a chassis by chassis guide. I also have the Williams book in this series. |
Autocourse 1978-79 (ISBN 0905138058) edited by Mike Kettlewell from what is now known as Hazleton Publishing. Arguably the best place to find information on a particular year of F1. This copy covers the glorious 1978 season. I'm quite pleased to have got this in good condition via eBay for less than the usual list price, when someone actually has a copy for sale that is. I also have Autocourse 1996-97, a signed David Coulthard Red Bull Racing edition of Autocourse 2006-7, Autocourse 2008-9 and Autocourse 2009-10. |
Lotus 72: Formula One Icon (ISBN 1902351061) by Michael Oliver from Coterie Press Ltd 2003, is the definative book on the Lotus 72. It covers the birth, development, failed replacement and finally the end of its career. Full of photos and quotes from virtually everyone ever involved with the car. |
Lotus 72 Owner's Manual (ISBN 0857331272) by Ian Wagstaff from Heynes Publishing 2012, covers the history of the Lotus 72 as well as what it takes to restore, maintain and race it. |
Lotus 78 and 79 - The Ground-Effect Cars (ISBN 1861265867) by John Tipler from The Crowood Press tells the story of how Lotus pioneered the use of ground-effect from early experiments with the Lotus 77, the first 'wing car' of the Lotus 78, to the domineering Lotus 79, the dismal Lotus 80 and the controversial Lotus 88(B). I also have Lotus 25 & 33 by the same author. |
Lotus Race Cars 1961 - 1994 Photo Album (ISBN 0946132291) by Norman Hayes from Icongrafix is a collection of photos of Lotus race cars (including F1, F2, sports cars and saloon cars) over the years in Britain, mainly at Oulton Park, Brands Hatch and Silverstone. I also have the Williams and McLaren books in this series. |
Colin Chapman: The Man And His Cars (ISBN 1859608442) by Gerard 'Jabby' Crombac from Heynes Publishing, 2001 (re-issue). Written by one of F1's best known jouralists and with a foreward by Enzo Ferrari, it covers Chapman's life and the fortunes of all things Lotus as one of F1's greatest designer/team principle. |
Colin Chapman: Wayward Genius (ISBN 1859832784) by Mike Lawrence from Breedon Books Publishing, 2002. Unlike the authorised biography (above) this book shows the darker side of Colin Chapman and how, if it wasn't for his untimely death, his drive for success and unauthodox business methods would have been his downfall. |
Mario Andretti Photo Album (World Champion Driver Series) (ISBN 1583880097) by Peter Nygaard from Icongrafix is a collection of photos of Mario over the period of his F1 career, mainly concentrating at his years at Lotus. It also covers his non-F1 career (ChampCar, Le Mans etc). |

My copy is signed by Mario himself and the author, both of which I met during the book signing at Sportspages in London. |
Ayrton Senna - The Team Lotus Years (ISBN 1902351169) by Johnny Tipler from Coterie Press Ltd, 2005. An in-depth look at Team Lotus during 1985-87 when Ayrton Senna gave the team it's last taste of glory, and how reliability issues stopped a realistic World Championship bid. |
