When the Lotus 86 was banned, work was started to make a more legal "dual chassis" car, which was the Lotus 88 (effectively a tidier and lighter Lotus 86 without sliding skirts). However the Lotus 88 and Lotus 88B were also banned and never started a race, leaving the 'temporary' Lotus 87 to get on with it.
Not the most fetching of cars...
